Overview

The Sales Engineer II independently supports technical engagements for mid-market and enterprise clients throughout the pre-sales process. This role partners closely with Sales Executives to understand customer environments, conduct technical discovery, and design cloud solutions that align with business objectives.

Sales Engineers at this level are expected to operate with increasing autonomy, delivering tailored demonstrations, assisting with solution architecture, and supporting complex customer conversations. The role also contributes to internal enablement, process improvement, and knowledge sharing across the technical sales organization.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary technical resource for customer engagements during the pre-sales cycle, partnering with Account Executives to support solution positioning.
  • Conduct detailed technical discovery sessions to understand client environments, infrastructure challenges, and business requirements.
  • Design and position cloud infrastructure solutions aligned with customer technical and operational goals.
  • Deliver customized product demonstrations, workshops, and scenario-based presentations.
  • Support development of Proof of Concepts (POCs) that demonstrate the value of Nexcess solutions.
  • Assist with designing hybrid, multi-cloud, and OpenStack-based infrastructure solutions for client environments.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Product, Implementation, and Customer Success teams to ensure accurate solution positioning and smooth transition to delivery teams.
  • Contribute to technical proposals, RFP/RFI responses, and customer-facing solution documentation.
  • Capture customer feedback, technical requirements, and competitive insights to help inform product and service improvements.
  • Support client enablement through architecture discussions, technical workshops, and knowledge transfer sessions.
  • Share knowledge and provide informal guidance to junior Sales Engineers.
  • Contribute to improvements in demo environments, internal tools, and pre-sales workflows.
  • Maintain current knowledge of emerging cloud technologies, infrastructure trends, and competitive solutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years experience in pre-sales engineering, solutions engineering, cloud consulting, or a related technical role.
  • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure platforms such as OpenStack, AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Experience with virtualization, networking, and cloud architecture fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with container technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes is preferred.
  • Exposure to Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Ansible is a plus.
  • Understanding of cloud security, monitoring, and operational best practices.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into business value.
  • Relevant cloud certifications (AWS, Azure, or OpenStack) are preferred but not required.
